Famous Apple designer Sir Jony Ive joins OpenAI
Briefly

Jony Ive, renowned for designing Apple's iPhone, joins OpenAI to enhance their hardware development. OpenAI will acquire Ive's startup 'io', aiming to create a new range of AI-focused devices. CEO Sam Altman emphasized the opportunity to fundamentally redefine computer usage. This strategic partnership aims to fill a gap in the tech industry's search for innovative hardware solutions, particularly targeting slow-moving companies like Apple. Valued at $6.4 billion, the merger reflects a growing emphasis on AI technologies and their integration into consumer products.
"I think we have the opportunity here to kind of completely re-imagine what it means to use a computer," Mr Altman said in video.
Sir Jony said he believed the world was on the "brink of a new generation of technology".
The idea for io, which Sir Jony founded last year, grew out of several years of quiet collaboration between the two companies.
The merger valued io at roughly $6.4bn, with OpenAI previously holding a 23% stake in the startup.
