The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is urged to enhance its AI governance practices, according to the Office of the Inspector General's recent report. While DHS made strides in AI policy development, such as appointing a chief AI officer and creating assessment inventories, the report highlighted 20 areas needing improvement. Key concerns include a lack of clear implementation plans for 2020 AI strategies and inadequate governance around privacy and civil rights. Without structured governance, DHS risks infringing on public safety and individual rights because of its AI operations.
Without appropriate, ongoing governance of its AI, DHS faces an increased risk that its AI efforts will infringe upon the safety and rights of the American people.
Although DHS made notable progress in its efforts to develop and issue AI-specific policies, it has not yet completed efforts to ensure the department has the policies needed to appropriately govern the use of AI.
