Conde Nast, other news orgs say AI firm stole articles, spit out "hallucinations"
Briefly

Publishers, led by Condé Nast, filed a lawsuit against AI startup Cohere, claiming copyright and trademark infringements regarding the use of their articles for training language models. The suit alleges Cohere used scraped content without permission, competes with the publishers' offerings, and even generates fake articles that misattribute sources and mislead the public. The complaint cites a list of over 4,000 infringed works, seeking substantial damages for these violations, including statutory damages and profits derived from the infringement.
Cohere uses scraped copies of our articles through training, real-time use, and outputs, to power its AI service, which competes with Publisher offerings.
Cohere not only steals our works but also blatantly manufactures fake pieces and attributes them to us, misleading the public and tarnishing our brands.
