News sites have no financial incentive to allow AI-powered search services to crawl and summarize their work if internet users see a summary page and never visit the publishing site or generate ad impressions.
Both Microsoft and Google plan to charge a $30 premium for AI features in Office 365 and Google Workspace. And developers implementing OpenAI's API have to pay for the privilege.
