Companies worth billions of dollars are, without permission, training generative AI models on creators' works, which are then being used to create new content that in many cases can compete with the original works.
The New York Times sued OpenAI, alleging that the company illegally used their articles to train AI systems. Comedian Sarah Silverman and other writers also sued OpenAI and Meta, while artists sued Midjourney, Stability AI, and DeviantArt for training AI models on their work.
