After a prolonged legal dispute, Epic Games’ popular game Fortnite has made its way back to Apple's App Store. This conflict arose after Epic attempted to bypass Apple’s 30% commission on the in-app purchases, leading to Apple removing Fortnite from the store. The antitrust lawsuit by Epic raised questions about Apple's control over its App Store. Although a judge did not classify Apple as a monopoly, she granted a ruling allowing developers to direct users to alternative payment methods, marking a significant win for Epic amidst back-and-forth appeals between the two companies.
In September 2021, Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers issued a split decision, ruling with Apple on nine of ten counts, but awarding Epic a crucial injunction ordering Apple to allow apps to link to external payment platforms.
Apple countersued Epic, seeking damages from Epic's terms of service violation. In response, Epic filed suit against Apple on antitrust grounds, launching an admittedly corny 'Free Fortnite' campaign.
