We use 30 billion tonnes of concrete each year - here's how to make it sustainable
Briefly

Concrete is the second most consumed material worldwide, heavily contributing to climate change through high emissions due to its energy-intensive production process. The Cement and Concrete Breakthrough Initiative aims to reduce cement emissions by 20% by 2030. Sustainability strategies include using alternative fuels, improving kiln efficiency, and recycling materials. However, there is a call for a more comprehensive strategy to achieve net-zero carbon emissions and complete reliance on recycled materials, addressing the larger impact of raw material extraction and overall resource use in the industry.
Reducing emissions is achievable. But a more comprehensive strategy for sustainable concrete is also needed, with the ultimate goals of net-zero carbon emissions and use of 100% recycled materials.
The construction industry needs to become more sustainable by minimizing carbon emissions and reducing resource and energy use, with targets set in part at the UN climate summit.
