Volvo is on the hunt for a U.S.-based battery supplier for its new EX90 electric SUV, currently powered by batteries from China's CATL. The search has been prompted by increased tariffs on Chinese imports, which forced Volvo to raise the EX90's starting price to $81,290—$3,300 more than initially planned. CEO Jum Rowan stated that finding a local supplier is crucial for minimizing costs. Potential candidates include South Korea's SK On and Japan's AESC, both of which have or are establishing manufacturing capabilities in the U.S.
"We’re looking to try and find if we can get a local battery manufacturer in the U.S. to help us minimize those costs," Volvo Cars CEO Jum Rowan said.
Volvo was forced to hike the starting price of its flagship electric SUV, the EX90, even before it hit the showroom floor.
