The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) has initiated legal action to end a strike by Amalgamated Transit Union Local 265 after negotiations reached an impasse. Union leaders advocate for renewed negotiations, highlighting a preference for dialogue over legal disputes. VTA's lawsuit claims the strike violates a no-strike clause still in effect, although the union disputes this interpretation. The strike impacts around 100,000 daily riders as bus and rail lines remain shut. Both sides emphasize the need for resolution, presenting differing views on contract language and obligations.
"I think the best course of action for everybody, the agency, the union and the public, is to get back to the table and resolve this," said ATU president Raj Singh.
"From a legal point of view, with the action that was taken over the last couple of days, I would just simply say that both sides clearly have different interpretations of the contract language," VTA Deputy General Manager Greg Richardson stated.
"VTA filed a lawsuit... alleging that ATU's decision to go on strike was a violation of a no strike clause in the previous contract," indicating the agency's position.
"That's their interpretation at this point, and that's not how it's been interpreted before," said Singh regarding VTA's legal stance.
