The University of Oregonâs Urbanism Next Center highlights the need for improved scooter parking to enhance urban mobility. Many cities face challenges with scooters blocking sidewalks, public art, and accessibility ramps, leading to calls for halting micromobility programs. Interviews with transportation leaders reveal that solutions exist in the form of clear parking norms and supportive infrastructure, which could alleviate these problems while promoting scooters as a viable transportation option. Cities must implement accessible and designated parking locations to help manage scooter usage effectively.
Parking is probably the top challenge we face with the program overall. There's certainly other challenges, but this one continues to bubble to the top.
Cities need to do more to set micromobility users up to succeed - by rolling out clear, easy-to-follow parking rules and great infrastructure to match.
