A recent study analyzed 43 major U.S. transit networks and found that ridership declines during extreme weather events linked to climate change, such as prolonged rain or heat. Despite controlling for varying community demographics, the trend was clear. Researchers from the University of Oregon cautioned that while current drops in ridership might not seem drastic, worsening climate conditions will likely exacerbate the situation, endangering vulnerable passengers, particularly older adults, who rely on public transit as their primary mode of travel.
Even now, you can end up waiting outside for the bus for quite a while, and that's very uncomfortable in 90-degree heat, especially for older adults.
The University of Oregon team warns that climate change-related ridership losses could get far worse, indicating current passengers are already suffering and even dying at stops.
