Despite government grants aiming to ease the transition to electric vehicles (EVs) in the UK, a survey indicates significant public reluctance. Currently, only about 1.4 million fully electric cars are on the road, making up just over 4%. Many Brits are skeptical about the 2035 ban on new petrol and diesel vehicle sales, with concerns around costs and charging access. Experts highlight the Electric Vehicle Chargepoint Grant (EVCG), which has provided significant funding for home charging installations, yet many remain unaware of such support, with 48% indicating they would switch if installation costs were eliminated.
As of January 2025, there are fewer than 1.4 million fully electric cars in the UK - just 4.09% of all vehicles on the road.
79% of survey respondents agree that the 2035 ban on new petrol and diesel car sales is too soon.
Since its introduction, the EVCG has provided over £5m worth of funding across the UK to make EV chargepoints more accessible.
48% of those surveyed said they would be willing to make the switch if installing EV charging points were free.
