El Camino Real is being transformed with the installation of dedicated bike lanes aimed at improving safety for cyclists in Mountain View, Los Altos, and Palo Alto. While the project has eliminated street parking to accommodate the lanes, which has sparked concerns among local business owners, many cyclists have begun to enjoy the new infrastructure. Terry Barton of the Bicycle Pedestrian Advisory Committee views the changes as a significant improvement, despite some narrow spots. However, not all cyclists feel secure using the lanes, highlighting mixed reactions to the upgrade.
El Camino is such a great thoroughfare. I take it driving all the time to get to different places ... and I would love to be able to bike on it, but I'm just too scared.
It's not pleasant on El Camino, but it's vastly improved in terms of comfort and perceived safety.
The new lanes aren't perfect, including being quite narrow in some spots, but they are a huge improvement.
Local cyclists have started to test out the new lanes, and for some bikers, they are a substantial and exciting improvement.
