Caltrans may eliminate lane on El Camino in North Fair Oaks
Briefly

Caltrans is proposing to improve safety on El Camino Real in North Fair Oaks by eliminating a lane to accommodate bike lanes and enhance pedestrian facilities. Council discussions have included three options which involve adding bike lanes and modifying existing lanes and parking. Given high pedestrian fatality rates, the second option, which retains street parking while allowing for wider sidewalks and protected bike lanes, was favored. The community is engaged in the decision-making process through surveys and meetings to finalize plans.
I'm pleased that something is going to be done; I just don't want to get killed when I'm on my bike.
The current layout of the road lacks space for bicyclists and pedestrians, leading to some of the highest pedestrian fatality rates in the Bay Area.
The second concept removes a lane from each direction, replacing it with wider sidewalks and raised concrete to protect the bike lane while keeping street parking.
Caltrans is proposing to eliminate a lane on El Camino Real to make the street safer for bicyclists and pedestrians.
