Amtrak CEO Stephen Gardner announced his resignation, emphasizing the need for the railroad to maintain confidence from President Trump's administration. This move comes amid concerns about Trump's past funding cuts to Amtrak, which received $2.4 billion in federal support for 2023. Despite operational challenges and a reported loss, Amtrak's ridership has recently surged beyond pre-COVID levels. The company aims to boost national ridership to 66 million by 2040 and has benefited from recent federal investments aimed at enhancing rail infrastructure.
"I am stepping down as CEO to ensure that Amtrak continues to enjoy the full faith and confidence of this administration," Gardner said in a statement.
"Trump during his first term repeatedly sought to cut funding to Amtrak, which received about $2.4 billion in annual federal support in 2023."
