A global review reveals that most back pain treatments yield little to no benefit, with just 10% considered effective. Lower back pain affects six in ten UK adults, leading to debilitating symptoms that can persist for years. Researchers analyzed 301 trials globally, concluding that only six out of 56 examined treatments offer small relief, with the majority showing uncertain efficacy. This highlights the need for further research to improve pain management strategies in a widespread health issue, as most existing non-surgical methods fall short of providing substantial relief.
Only 10% of non-surgical treatments for back pain are effective, providing minimal relief, while the rest offer little benefit or may worsen the condition.
Our review shows that one in 10 non-surgical treatments provide only small analgesic effects beyond placebo, indicating the efficacy for most treatments is uncertain.
