Contreras took a low sinker that landed in the bottom of the strike zone, leading to a called strike three. As Contreras walked toward the Cardinals' dugout, he turned his head back toward the home plate umpire. Although it wasn't shown on the live broadcast, Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol then said something to the umpire and was ejected off-screen. When the broadcast finished showing replays of the called strike, it switched to a shot of Marmol and Contreras exchanging words with the umpire.
ST. LOUIS -- First baseman Willson Contreras threw a bat that mistakenly hit his own coach and tossed bubble gum on the field after he was ejected in the St. Louis Cardinals' 7-6 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday night. Manager Oliver Marmol also was tossed during an animated argument with the umpires after a called third strike in the seventh inning.
