A victory will make Cal bowl eligible for the third straight season. The Bears make their second trip east in ACC play, having won 28-24 at Boston College on Sept. 27. They are coming off a 21-18 home victory vs. North Carolina, but they are just 2-2 since a 3-0 start. A win would put Cal two games over .500 in conference play for the first time since opening 2-0 in the Pac-12 in 2015.
"I am working my rear end off to get us back to where we're in that mix and playoff talk," Beamer said. "And that's the same thing I told our football team today, that I guess the gist of that article was that would be a parachute or something for me to get out of here and have a soft landing spot. Well, I'm not happy with where we are right now, and I'm determined to get it fixed."
Virginia Tech has proposed adding an extra $229 million to its athletics budget over the next four years to help position the Hokies to compete with the top programs in the ACC, a crucial moment with the hire of a new football coach looming. The school's Board of Visitors will hold a virtual meeting Sept. 30 to consider the adjustment.
Joseph completed 16 of 22 passes and also rushed for 63 yards and a score for the Monarchs (2-1), who registered the program's first road win over an ACC opponent. "We just couldn't get any momentum going," Pry said. "We turned the ball over in the red zone. We get a turnover and we can't cash in on it. There were flashes, in the game, of the ability to run the ball. There were flashes of the ability to throw the ball, but not near consistent enough."
Virginia Tech junior linebacker Caleb Woodson, a team captain, was arrested Saturday on a charge of misdemeanor driving while intoxicated. Woodson, 21, has a court date scheduled for Sept. 9. According to online court records, this is his first DWI offense. "We are aware of an incident involving Caleb Woodson," Virginia Tech said in a statement. "We take this matter seriously and will handle it according to athletic department policy and university policy."
