Studio Ghibli is heading to London this winter with the arrival of Maison Ghibli, an official pop-up shop dedicated to the legendary Japanese animation studio. Opening in Knightsbridge for a limited run, it's the first time Londoners will be able to browse a fully curated selection of Studio Ghibli-certified merchandise in a standalone space. Fans of Spirited Away, My Neighbour Totoro, Princess Mononoke, and Kiki's Delivery Service can expect shelves filled with plushies, minifigures, stationery, homewares
Like any worthy endeavor, all it takes is time, perseverance, and, perhaps most importantly, inspiration. In this case, that was Tosk's love of Studio Ghibli films. "Totoro is my favorite," he told me. "It's like a warm nostalgia blanket! Such a sweet innocent story of childhood wonders. It [also] has environmental themes but doesn't hit you over the head with it."
Hayao Miyazaki's Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind Box Set is on sale for an excellent price at Amazon. Normally $80, the 1,104-page, slipcased collection is discounted to only $47.89. Nausicaa is Miyazaki's only manga series, and the hardcover box set collects the complete story arc. Amazon's current price essentially matches the best deal we've seen all year ($47.61)--and that deal didn't stick around for long. Amazon estimates orders placed today will ship within one to three weeks.
A study published by JMIR Serious Games, a peer reviewed journal focused on how gaming is connected to education, health, and social change, looked into how the brain responds to both watching films produced by the Japanese animation studio and playing the open-world game The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The researchers gathered 518 postgraduate students and divided them into four groups.
From 7:30pm to 9pm, the trio will transform the cavernous nave of the world's largest Gothic cathedral into a temple of nostalgia, filled with the melodies of Joe Hisaishi, Satoshi Takebe and Yuji Nomi. Expect the goosebump-inducing themes from films like Spirited Away , My Neighbor Totoro , Princess Mononoke , Howl's Moving Castle and more, played with the kind of reverence (and drama) the setting practically demands.
Japanese media has mastered something Western productions often struggle with: the strategic use of silence. Walk into any Tokyo café and you'll notice how differently sound functions compared to its American counterpart. While Western establishments fill every quiet moment with background music or ambient noise, Japanese spaces often embrace what they call "ma"-the meaningful pause between sounds that creates emotional resonance.
