The newly released Deluxe Limited Edition of Diana Wynne Jones' 'Howl's Moving Castle', available for preorder, presents the original story that inspired the Studio Ghibli film. Published in 1986, the novel features protagonist Sophie Hatter, who becomes an elderly woman after incurring the wrath of the Witch of the Waste. Her quest to break the curse introduces her to the enigmatic Wizard Howl, a character with a complex past. Notably, the book diverges significantly from the animated film in character development and narrative style. It’s the first of a trilogy, with subsequent books exploring different characters and adventures.
Originally published in 1986, the story is much different than the 2004 film directed by Hayao Miyazaki and serves as the first book in a trilogy.
Sophie’s journey sees her meet up with the charming Howl, who is tormented by dark secrets from his past, strike a deal with a fire demon, and confront the wicked witch responsible for her condition.
The sequel, Castle in the Air, follows unsuccessful carpet salesman Abdullah as he daydreams about a more adventurous life.
