Starbucks closures disproportionately affected New York, disrupting neighborhood routines and provoking landlord outrage, labor concerns, and strong public attachment to local stores.
Four Starbucks locations in San Jose have closed, following the company announcing it would shutter 1% of its stores across North America. Two other locations in Mountain View and one each in Cupertino, Santa Clara and Milpitas have also closed. The company laid off 900 corporate, non-retail employees and has 18,300 stores left across the U.S. and Canada. It's unclear how many retail workers have been affected by the closures.
Trouble is brewing for Starbucks fans in New York City. The coffee giant announced it will shutter 34 stores across the five boroughs as part of a nationwide downsizing effort that also includes 900 layoffs, per The New York Times. The cuts come amid a broader review of the chain's North American operations, which Starbucks says is aimed at making sure each shop delivers on its promise of a "warm and welcoming space."
After Starbucks announced it would be shutting hundreds of stores, its website is listing dozens in the Bay Area as being closed as of Sunday, Sept. 28. To check if a store is on the closure list, go to the Starbucks store locator online, find your desired outlet and click the information icon to check whether it will be open beyond this week.
