Nearly 20 Starbucks locations in Greater Boston have closed since Sept. 28, leaving customers and prime retail spaces vacant. The specialty coffee industry is experiencing turmoil and uncertainty about where displaced customers will obtain daily coffee. Boston's coffee landscape has diversified over three decades, with independents and other chains proliferating since Starbucks entered the market 31 years ago. Neighborhoods like Davis Square now feature multiple specialty cafes able to absorb some former Starbucks customers. Some independent cafes have already seen unfamiliar faces since closures. Market saturation persists in many areas, which could limit significant business growth despite available storefronts.
