Established in 1946, Fosters Freeze was the first fast food restaurant in California, and you can still visit 38 locations today. McDonald's was founded in 1940 in California. However it wouldn't be until 1948 that they revamped the restaurant into a fast food format by adopting what they called a Speedee Service System. Likewise, In-N-Out didn't show up on the scene until 1948, meaning Fosters Freeze had a little time to perfect the idea before the more popular chains caught on.

Started by couple Farah and Sam in 2022, after Sam began making soft serve at Leila's Cafe where he was head chef, Soft & Swirly has been popping up across London at places like Rambutan, Netil Market and e5 Bakehouse. Over the years, the pair grew the brand from soft serve (they've done flavours like salted black sesame, malted milk & vanilla, watermelon & raspberry sorbet, and ginger & star anise) to include seasonal scoops, ice cream tubs, sundaes and pies.

SoMa's latest green tea newcomer is Cafe Nagomi, a takeout counter specializing in matcha drinks and soft serve. On top of a traditional matcha latte, they also have versions with white chocolate, hojicha, and, as with other recent matcha spots, an einspanner-theirs is with strawberry.

McDonald's apple pie features 100% American-grown apples and a lattice crust baked to perfection. Pairing it with vanilla soft serve creates a complex, delicious dessert.

Frozen yogurt starts with a yogurt base that is then mixed with stabilizers and flavorings, which may or may not retain probiotics depending on processing.
