There is a woman in professional tennis for whom the very mention of her name has long sparked a wistfulness among her fellow players, current and past.They rave about her buttery smooth strokes, her deceptive power, that sublime balance, the sculpted physique and the seemingly effortless movement that make it so easy to imagine her running the offense on her nation's basketball team, or the center midfield on its soccer team.

Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan provided an update on the recently-injured Rasmus Sandin on Thursday.The defenseman absorbed a brutal knee-on-knee hit in May while playing for Sweden at the 2023 IIHF World Championship.Speaking with reporters after head coach Spencer Carbery's introductory press conference, MacLellan said that Sandin's injury was not serious, per NBC Sports Washington's Ethan Cadeaux.

Latvia, generally speaking, isn't supposed to be here.While the Maroon and White has had a steady trickle of NHLers come across the pond and bring glory or at least recognition to the small baltic state, Latvia generally has held the position of "spirited underdog" for pretty much every year they're in the IIHF World Championships.

It has been almost five years since a bid from the United States, Canada and Mexico beat out a proposal from Morocco to host soccer's 2026 men's World Cup.Now the competition has turned intramural.The stadiums for the tournament have been chosen, but FIFA, world soccer's governing body, has not yet said which one will host the final game.

Here we go again.It's a big Europa League night in Turin.Just like the last three rounds of Juventus ' Europa League adventure as a result of getting dumped out of the Champions League group stage, things will start in front of the hometown crowd in Turin.In the first leg of the Europa League semifinals tonight, Juventus will face the specialists of the Europa League, Sevilla, who is in the midst of an impressive run under their new manager after spending a good amount of the 2022-23 season around the relegation zone in La Liga.

Had you been at Roland Garros around supper time Wednesday evening and heard the crowd of nearly 10,000 fans chanting Lucas Pouille's name at a near deafening level, you would have assumed you had just missed a triumphant performance.Not even close.Pouille, a 29-year-old Frenchman, on the court named for Suzanne Lenglen, the French tennis star of the 1920s, lost in straight sets to Cameron Norrie, a Briton to add insult to injury, in less than two hours.

Iga Swiatek, Elena Rybakina and Aryna Sabalenka have won a combined five Grand Slam singles titles.Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic have won 64.Swiatek, Rybakina and Sabalenka have been at the top of the sport for roughly a year.Some combination of Federer, Nadal and Djokovic has been there the last 20.

Owen Davidson, an Australian tennis player who formed a dominant mixed doubles team with Billie Jean King in the 1960s and '70s, winning eight Grand Slam titles with her, along with five doubles titles with other partners, died on Friday in Conroe, Texas, a suburb of Houston.He was 79.The cause was cancer, his longtime friend Isabel Suliga said.

Latvia defeated Sweden in a 3-1 upset Thursday, knocking the Swedes out of the IIHF World Championship in the quarterfinals.Sweden played the elimination game without one of their top players, with Rasmus Sandin still out of the lineup with a lower-body injury.The loss marks the fourth straight tournament where Sweden failed make the podium, last doing so with a gold medal win in 2018.
