New York Prisons Bill Would Make It Easier to Fire Abusive Guards
A bill has been filed in the New York state senate that would give the corrections department the power to remove abusive guards from prisons.
The bill would give the commissioner of the department the final say in cases of serious misconduct, bypassing third-party arbitrators.
The bill was introduced in response to an investigation that revealed the department's disciplinary system was ineffective at holding abusive guards accountable. [ more ]

John J Lennon, a prisoner, is involved in a new initiative called the Inside literary prize, which is the first major US book award to be judged exclusively by incarcerated people.
