Thousands of criminals could be released early under government sentencing reform, Tories say
"Keir Starmer is putting criminals before communities and letting predators out early," Mullan said. "Under Labour's plans, thousands of the most serious would no longer be treated as such, an insult to thousands of victims across the country."
""Under this "earned progression scheme", prisoners released early will be monitored with enhanced supervision in the community, followed by a period on licence, which is unsupervised."
""a betrayal of victims""
A sentencing review recommends allowing some offenders on fixed-length terms to be released after serving a third of their sentence if they behave well. The scheme, described as an "earned progression" approach, pairs early release with enhanced community supervision and a subsequent period on licence that is unsupervised. Conservatives say more than 2,000 prisoners convicted of serious sexual and stalking offences would have jail time reduced and claim over 62% of jailed rapists would benefit. Conservatives tabled an amendment to prevent the most serious offenders from qualifying. Labour and shadow ministers condemned the plan and used strong language of criticism.
