"I was sent to hospital straight away with a referral letter and was waiting for 16 hours," she says. "I had X-rays, bloods and all the usual checks done, and afterwards I was told that I was fine, that there was nothing to worry about, and that it was just viral. I went home happy, thinking that it would pass soon and that I was just being dramatic."

I had a lady referred for a potential miscarriage from a clinic and when I scanned her they'd measured a bleed in the womb and they completely missed a very early pregnancy sac with a baby inside it, said Katie Thompson, a hospital sonographer and president of the SoR. Potentially, if they were at a private clinic that could offer a miscarriage service, then they could have been given some medication to bring on a miscarriage on a pregnancy that was actually not miscarrying, she said.

In 2025, the Emergency Care Research Institute (ECRI) produced a ranked list of 10 threats to patient care. At the top of the list was "Dismissing patient, family, and caregiver concerns." In a survey done by HealthCentral, they found that over 94 percent of their survey-takers felt that "their doctors have ignored or dismissed their symptoms." More than 61 percent of respondents reported that their doctors "blamed them for their symptoms or made them feel like they were crazy."
