Our small crew stayed in the Saadia riad, where rooms overlooked a courtyard lined with Moroccan zellige (tilework) and intricately carved arched balconies. The interiors were a labor of love by the family of Caid Azzi Boujemaa, a former palace worker who was gifted the Riad in the early 20th century as a thank you for his loyalty. Rich in seafood and history, Rockport was once a vibrant hub for the export of timber and granite, and a dock was built in 1743 to make shipments easier. Then, during the War of 1812, Rockport served as a critical lookout point and was even involved in a small battle, during which residents battled the British with muskets and anything else they could get their hands on-they even used their stockings as slingshots.

The Gunton Arms is not your average country pub however. Rather than being in the heart of cute little village, it's tucked inside the 1,000-acre grounds of Gunton Park, surrounded by wide open fields and lots and lots of deer. It's run by art dealer Ivor Braka, and his eclectic collection is scattered throughout the pub and bedrooms - think Tracey Emin in the dining room, Damien Hirst in the bar - making it as much gallery as gastropub.
