Kia was one of the first legacy automakers to launch great EVs, with the EV6 and EV9 arriving to critical acclaim. But both posted huge sales declines last month, in part due to an industry-wide EV slowdown. That's not the whole story, though, as the mechanically identical Hyundai Ioniq 5 is selling far better than the EV6. Here's what's going on.
Hyundai slashed prices for the 2026 Ioniq 5 by up to $9,800 on Wednesday. The cuts make the Ioniq 5 perhaps America's best EV deal. The Ioniq 5 now undercuts the Tesla Model Y by a long shot, while offering better value and specs than other competitors. If you're anything like me, you're kicking yourself for missing out on the $7,500 federal clean-car tax credit, which expired prematurely on Tuesday.
The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is one of the best EVs out there, and it was made even better when the 2025 model hit dealer lots. It has a bigger battery, which contributes to more range, a Tesla-style NACS charging port, a rear windshield wiper (the old one didn't have one), and a bunch of other niceties inside, such as wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
