For over a thousand years, Constantinople stood among the medieval world's richest and most sophisticated cities. As the capital of the Byzantine Empire, it was more than a political centre: it was a living city shaped by imperial ceremony and Christian devotion, by merchants and craftsmen, and by the everyday routines that kept a vast urban population fed, housed, and working.

The closure of the camp is a day of very mixed emotions for everyone who has been involved in supporting the residents.

Disabled residents living in temporary accommodation have said broken lifts forced them to sleep in the lobby. The Waterloo Hub Hotel (WHH) on Kennington Road, near Lambeth North station, houses dozens of people, some with limited mobility, under the care of Camden and Westminster councils. Wheelchair-user Michael said he was told by the council "to walk up the stairs", but "I am disabled".

At the top of " The Hill," Bayview's steep enclave of largely low-income, subsidized apartments overlooking the western half of San Francisco, residents driving by or sitting on stoops on an uncharacteristically warm Tuesday afternoon got a bit of a surprise: There was Mayor Daniel Lurie, clambering up the steep slope, followed by a band of his security, staff, organizers and residents going unit to unit.
