Collapsed ceiling causing concern in Coney Island NYCHA apartment
"Nacobia Williams is now putting a facemask on her 6-month-old daughter because she's worried about what the newborn is breathing in. "I feel frustration," said Williams. "I feel anger. I'm scared because I don't know what's in this [air]." Williams said it all started a little over a month ago, when a leak ran along the ceiling of her living room and dining area. Then it bubbled and burst onto her, the newborn, as well as her two sons."
""It was brown water," said Williams. "It was plaster. It was pieces of the wall that came down." Pieces were still coming down on Tuesday when News 12 visited the apartment. News 12 crews saw paint chipping and peeling from the walls and a soft spot sat near the windows. "This is deployable conditions," said Williams. "We shouldn't have to live like this. We keep getting sick. We're back and forth from the hospital; and [NYCHA is] like, 'We're going to fix it.' [And then] nothing.' Williams old News 12 that she can't use the outlets on the wall, and NYCHA turned off her heat about two weeks ago."
A ceiling leak developed along the living room and dining area of a Unity Towers NYCHA apartment in Coney Island and later collapsed, releasing brown water, plaster, and wall fragments into the unit. A resident is putting a facemask on her six-month-old over concern about airborne contaminants. Paint chipping, peeling walls, and a soft spot near the windows were observed. Electrical outlets are unusable and heat was turned off reportedly due to steam from the hole, leaving the apartment cold. Family members report repeated illness and hospital visits. The family is current on rent and is demanding immediate repairs. NYCHA expects to move the family temporarily for repairs and then return them home.
