The Verge's homepage redesign aims to enhance reader engagement by balancing top stories and thematic collections.
Our old homepage hero technically showed all the platforms we support - but it felt overly corporate, like a feature list wearing a trench coat. The previous hero featured an animated headline that rotated through Buffer's supported social media platforms. While it did the job, it didn't feel very "Buffer-y." We wanted to make a stronger first impression - something with more liveliness and delight.
The main problem with the existing homepage was that, besides the most recent posts, other content, once it aged and 'fell off' the front page, was then difficult to discover. The new design makes more use of available screen 'real estate', is visually much richer, and reorganizes 18 years of posts, so that even older long-forgotten posts are more easily found.
"One of the things we know that's going to be really important is that it just needs to work right out of the box," Smalley said. "We're definitely trying to see how much control people want, but that's something we want to hear from customers on."
