Rescuers have recovered the body of an Indonesian woman who was caught in a volcanic eruption on Mount Dukono on Indonesia's remote island of Halmahera, officials have said. Search operations continued on Saturday for the bodies of two Singaporeans. The dead hikers were among 20 who set out to scale the 1,355-metre (4,445ft) volcano in defiance of safety restrictions and became stranded when Dukono erupted early on Friday, spewing a thick ash column about 6 miles (10km) into the air.
The National Park Service has not officially confirmed the victim's identity, stating it will withhold the name until 72 hours after next-of-kin notification. However, multiple reports identified the missing hiker as Anthony Pollio, 33, of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, who had communicated plans to hike to the Mount Brown Fire Lookout, a steep, 10-mile out-and-back route ascending more than 4,000 feet, with numerous switchbacks and blind corners that increase the risk of surprise wildlife encounters.
When she did not return, friends raised the alarm. A search team found her the next day, less than 100 yards (91 metres) from the parking lot. According to the infrared thermometer used by the death investigator at the scene, Hannah's body registered 142F (61C) after a day in the desert sun. Inside her backpack were three empty water bottles, packets of fruit snacks, sunscreen and a fully charged portable phone battery. Her phone, however, had no power. Heat exposure killed Moody a week before her 32nd birthday.
"A true testament of man's impact on the land, Providence Canyon is one of the most outstanding examples of (accidental) manmade erosion, created less than 200 years ago by poor farming practices," Reba Bolton, the park's assistant manager, tells Travel + Leisure. Plus, she adds, while it may look like it's made of rock, Providence Canyon is formed by 43 different shades of sand and soil.
The outdoor hiking app AllTrails recently released a new feature called Outdoor Lens, which uses artificial intelligence to identify and spot a hiker's surroundings. The feature, which rolled out last month, boasts a database of more than 50,000 plants and insects. The lens can even identify different fungi in a variety of locations. Outdoor Lens is exclusive to AllTrails' paid-membership tier, called Peak, which costs $79.99 per year.
Colorado's Rocky Mountain National Park is always gorgeous - but in my opinion, it's especially beautiful in the fall. By mid-September, the tall aspen trees in the park turn a brilliant gold, standing out against the high mountain peaks. Walking around Bear Lake is one of my favorite ways to take in the fall foliage. Just keep in mind that if you're visiting the park through mid-October, timed-entry reservations are required for certain parts of the day.
Analyzing 2,600 frames taken by a drone from approximately 50 meters away allows for the identification of the missing hiker's helmet by AI within an afternoon. If done manually, it would take weeks or months.
Hiking experts suggest always planning ahead if you're planning to hike. Start your day well-hydrated, and bring extra water and salty snacks to replenish lost electrolytes.
