"Many were hypothermic and without gear even near suitable for the conditions,"
"Most had no idea that Summit services would be unavailable and that the state park was closed for the season. A few indicated it was their first hike ever."
"Hike Mount Washington like it is any one of the other 48 peaks,"
"Do not assume services or a ride down. The summit is halfway."
Nearly two dozen hikers were stranded on the 6,288-foot summit of Mount Washington and were brought down by Mount Washington Cog Railway employees after becoming hypothermic and lacking appropriate gear. Summit temperatures fell to single digits when wind chill was accounted for, creating hazardous winter conditions. The Cog Railway ceases summit service in mid-October and the state park closes for the season, with trains running only to Waumbek Station at about 4,000 feet. Many hikers did not realize summit services were unavailable; some were first-time hikers. Railway staff warned hikers to research conditions, carry proper gear, and not assume a ride down.
