A Hiker Was Missing for Nearly a Year-Until an AI System Recognized His Helmet
Briefly

In the search for a missing hiker, a drone captured 2,600 images over 183 hectares, analyzed by AI to quickly identify the helmet of 64-year-old Nicola Ivaldo. The body was discovered on July 31, 2024, thanks to AI detecting color differences in the drone images. This operation took less than three days, with initial image capture completed in five hours, leading to the identification of suspicious spots by evening, despite delays from fog.
Analyzing 2,600 frames taken by a drone from approximately 50 meters away allows for the identification of the missing hiker's helmet by AI within an afternoon. If done manually, it would take weeks or months.
The operation, which involved searching for the missing hiker, was completed in less than three days, including recovery and weather interruptions.
