Durham regional council won't make a decision on a roughly $1.1-billion 10-year plan for the region's police service until after the municipal election in October. The strategy, created by the Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) and regional staff, calls for more funding for the service through a series of property tax hikes over the next decade. The increases could push the region's total property tax increase above 10 per cent in 2027.

Durham Region police reported that the 23-year-old man was arrested while allegedly setting another residential fire, despite being on probation and barred from incendiary devices.

Nimmo is one of over 200 people who were part of The Salvation Army's rental housing program in Durham Region, which ended in November. Now, Nimmo's family says they're struggling to help him find shelter. Durham Region funded the program and says it is providing support to all former tenants.

Durham police say they have made 64 arrests and laid 155 charges during a safe shop initiative to stop retail theft. They say the five-week initiative, which ran between Nov. 10 and Dec. 16, was focused on retail theft enforcement. Police say the east division community response unit, alongside front-line officers and the LCBO resource protection unit worked together to identify high theft locations across Durham region.
