Should Durham Region have its own auditor general? Here's why one councillor wants residents to decide | CBC News
"Taxpayers deserve to know their money is being spent wisely, Leahy told CBC News. An independent auditor general, really what it does is it shines a bright light into the corners of government where waste is high. If an independent office were to be created, it would put the municipality into a small number of large Ontario municipalities with their own independent auditor general office. Most municipalities audit internally or contract the work out."
"Earlier this year, Peel Region established its own independent Office of the Auditor General. In September, Leahy asked councillors to support his motion to do the same. His request was deferred to the region's finance committee for review. He also put forward a motion asking the region to conduct a value for money audit on renovations done to the region's headquarters in Whitby. That motion was defeated."
Whitby councillor Chris Leahy will move a motion at regional council to place a referendum question on next year’s municipal election ballot about creating an independent external auditor general office. Leahy argues an independent auditor general would expose government waste and assure taxpayers that public funds are spent wisely. Creation of a full-time office would place the municipality among a small number of large Ontario municipalities with such offices. The region already has an internal audit division and undergoes annual third-party audits. Peel Region recently established an independent auditor general, and Leahy’s earlier motions were deferred or defeated.
