Fr Paul Murphy was stabbed seven times with a hunting knife while attempting to drive into Renmore Barracks in Galway on the morning of August 15 2024. Fr Murphy, who required surgery for his injuries and lost some feeling in his arms, said he forgave his attacker before hugging him in the courtroom following the trial. His attacker, who was 16 at the time and cannot be identified, was arrested at the scene after being restrained by soldiers.

Michael H. Ollis: Killed by a suicide bomber. The NYC native was under direct enemy attack involving improvised explosive devices (IEDs), suicide vests and indirect fire at the base when he ordered his fellow soldiers to move from a building to bunkers for protection. When his team was safe, he reentered the building and checked for casualties before moving toward the enemy force that was penetrating the base.

Former EU Commissioner, Phil Hogan, has been nominated as Ireland's candidate to be the next Director-General of the UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). The Cabinet has agreed to put him name forward for the role and it's expected he will get the backing of other EU countries for the election of the position, which takes place in summer 2027.
