Betty Crocker Delights Spice Cake Mix is thin, under-spiced, and dry despite acceptable sweetness and texture.
Boxed cake mixes are convenient, of course: add a couple of eggs, oil, and water, slide the batter-filled tin into the oven, and you're done. But they can be versatile: Swap out that water for a liquid that'll add some oomph-coffee, for example, in a chocolate cake. Or use a bright, verdant olive oil in place of the neutral oil to add a layer of complexity to any boxed cake.
In our ranking of 13 popular boxed chocolate cake mix brands, we taste-tested several different Betty Crocker varieties. Alas, the highest any of the products ranked was No. 6 (chocolate fudge Super Moist). Across the entire category, boxed mixes by Pillsbury, Krusteaz, King Arthur Baking Company, and Duncan Hines outranked Betty Crocker's offerings by a longshot.
