A decade ago, a multimedia artist from The Bronx got a lucky break. She was one of the winners of a lottery - to which over 53,000 people applied - that allowed her to live in one of the 89 affordable apartments in a stately former public school in East Harlem. At the time, she was living in Staten Island, paying for a space that was smaller, more expensive and more difficult for people who wanted to see her art to visit.
It started as a sworn secret between eight New England artists. In 2003, Michael Townsend and seven friends moved into the Providence Place Mall. They'd discovered an empty 750 square-foot loft space. They hauled up furniture - a couch, a PlayStation, TV, waffle-maker. Hauled up two tons of cinder blocks for an apartment wall. In 2007, mall security discovered the apartment. Townsend was arrested and banned from the mall. He named no names.
The 61st edition of the Venice Biennale, the most prestigious and oldest-running art biennial, will open 9 May next year. A national survey of artists, commissioned by the Mellon Foundation, in partnership with NORC at the University of Chicago, has revealed a closer look at the livelihoods of US artists. The 102-page report takes into account 2,618 artists' work and jobholding, earnings, health and wellbeing, and personal identifiers such as age, marital status, gender, and race. The comprehensive study considered artists across five artistic disciplines: performing arts, visual arts, writing, craft arts, and other arts that were broken down into in 37 artistic subdisciplines;
