Amazon Ring sounds death knell for surveillance as a service

Amazon Ring is discontinuing the Request for Assistance (RFA) tool that allowed law enforcement to request video footage without a warrant.
The Neighbors app will still be available for public safety agencies to share safety tips, updates, and community events, but they will no longer be able to request video through the app. [ more ]

Amazon Ring has disabled a feature in its Neighbors app that allowed police to request doorbell and surveillance camera footage without a warrant.
Privacy advocates and lawmakers have long criticized Ring for expanding police surveillance and enabling racial profiling.
