He took me for an Italian lunch in Pimlico, where we chatted about this and that until he brought up the real reason for his invitation. He had heard about my work to establish Stonewall-a lobby group to present to the government and the world at large the case for treating UK lesbians and gays equally under the law with the rest of the population.

"It's an outrage," says Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal. "But it's an outrage upon another outrage because we know that this administration seems very comfortable in attacking religious, ethnic, and other minorities, including the LGBTQ population."

Eli Erlick's journey "starts with my story being a trans girl who came out in 2003 - before we were supposed to have existed, according to the mainstream media right now," she tells PinkNews. A couple of years ago, frustrated with the "erasure of trans history" and continued anti-trans narratives, she began writing a history book. It spotlights underreported trans stories from 1850 to 1950, including some experiences that "haven't been told in 120 years".

A core message for charities and advocates is that campaigning by diktat rather than persuasion is rarely successful; engaging in debate is essential for progress.
