Weishan Ancient Town in Dali, Yunnan, birthplace of the Nanzhao Kingdom, preserves Ming and Qing dynasty urban layouts across its 600-year history. Chongzheng Academy, constructed during the Ming Dynasty's Hongzhi period over 500 years ago, underwent significant deterioration. In 2021, TAO architectural firm was commissioned to restore and renovate the academy into a comprehensive cultural destination. The transformation incorporates a bookstore, exhibition spaces, small theater, and café facilities. The project extends beyond the building itself to include surrounding urban design. The initiative aims to reestablish the location's historical prosperity while creating a year-round public gathering space that encourages community participation and contributes to the broader regeneration of the ancient town.
