During the Depression, American flour companies printed dress patterns on cotton packaging. French linen grain sacks were repurposed into household items. Portuguese cereal bags were reused as rugs and blankets.
Designer Annelie Augustin started Studio Augustin using textiles from northeastern Portugal. She values circular design and craftsmanship, aiming for each piece to bring a sense of peace.
Annelie preserved old sacks by collecting them in a region near the Spanish border. The bags are now considered collectibles due to a lack of tourist interest in the area.
Studio Augustin's pillows and poufs are crafted by local women artisans from vintage grain bags, each piece unique. Materials were spun, dyed, woven, and hand-stitched in villages for decades.
