A team of volunteers known as Save the Tiles is working tirelessly to salvage vintage tiles from homes in the Eaton fire burn zone. Homeowner Valerie Elachi recalls dancing down a staircase from which tiles were preserved. Their mission is crucial as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers prepares to demolish properties, and the group has conserved tiles from about 50 homes while tracking down homeowners for permission to save more. Challenges include finding skilled masons and overcoming obstacles in reaching property owners to secure their support.
It's a stair, and all the tiles. We are racing to remove and preserve thousands of vintage and historically significant tiles from the Eaton fire burn zone before the properties are bulldozed.
Having something to salvage was a gift, she thought, and a bitter reminder of all they had lost. The work on Elachi's home was being done by a ragtag group of volunteers.
