"My ambitions to explore a new era of design were kind of haunting me. I wanted to see what was next for me creatively. And with that, Calderone kicked off a very personal project in Manhattan that sent her deep down the Art Deco rabbit hole."
"I wanted this moody, sexy, dark bathroom. I worked with a company in Copenhagen called File Under Pop, and they developed super-oversized lava stone tiles which feel like a rich lacquer to me."
Athena Calderone, founder of the style website Eyeswoon, embarked on a personal design project in her Manhattan Tribeca apartment to explore new creative directions. Partnering with architect Danielle Siggerud, Calderone developed an elegantly scripted interpretation of European decorative arts featured in Architectural Digest's April issue. The project showcases four design highlights, including a darkly alluring guest bathroom. When Calderone purchased the apartment, it retained elements from its previous owner, French architect Thierry Despont, including a black bathroom that required reimagining. Calderone collaborated with Copenhagen-based File Under Pop to create oversized lava stone tiles that evoke a rich lacquer finish, achieving her vision of a moody, sexy, dark bathroom space.
