District 27, designed by INS Studio, reimagines a former laboratory into a multifunctional coffee shop and community space in Makassar, Indonesia. By preserving the essential structure of the building, the design incorporates spatial and material strategies that facilitate interaction and comfort. The refined terracotta exterior integrates seamlessly with the local architecture. Internally, the space features strategic frosted glass partitions for privacy and a central coffee bar that organizes the layout, while an innovative reflective wall highlights an underutilized corner, enhancing visual dynamics and spatial perception.
District 27 transforms a former laboratory into a vibrant community space and coffee shop, maintaining the original structure while enhancing the design for connection and functionality.
The project emphasizes privacy and light flow by cleverly using frosted glass blocks, effectively dividing the seating area without compromising the open feel.
A full-height mirror was creatively utilized to invigorate an underused corner, enhancing the spatial experience and serving as a visual anchor near the restrooms.
External refinements in terracotta reflect the local architectural style, establishing a unique identity for District 27 while ensuring aesthetic harmony with the surroundings.
