Briefly

The renovation project for a 60-year-old building near Kumagaya Station aims to create a vibrant new esthetic space on the second floor while preserving historical materials. Initially housing a restaurant and mahjong parlor, the space features unique textures from its past. The owner, having opened a beauty salon on the first floor, required an expansion due to increasing demand. Selected materials, particularly in gray and silver, complement the colorful styling services while reflecting the building's history, highlighting the interplay of old and new.
The planned building is a three-story steel-framed structure located just a few minutes' walk from Kumagaya Station, built approximately 60 years ago.
The initial goal was to preserve as much of these existing materials as possible while creating a new space using fresh materials.
Okada states, 'From a different perspective, gray can be seen as a color open to infinite nuances...It possesses the potential to express subtle gradations.'
The color gray emphasizes the salon’s focus on color styling, as it harmonizes with the existing elements while enhancing the vibrancy of clients' hairstyles.
