Stefano Boeri Architetti Converts Former Rome Transit Depot Into Multifunctional Civic Space
Rome City Council approved a memorandum for regenerating Depositi delle Vittorie in Piazza Bainsizza, a former ATAC depot from the early 1900s. The site had been abandoned for nearly two decades and is now privately owned. Stefano Boeri Architetti will transform the decommissioned transportation infrastructure through adaptive reuse and the addition of cultural, educational, commercial, co-working, and leisure functions. The plan includes new public spaces and extensive landscaped areas across about 16,000 square meters. A central element is an 8,000-square-meter rooftop garden elevated 15 meters above ground level. The ground floor will function as an open courtyard with commercial services, cultural spaces, and work environments, while the rooftop garden will host events, installations, and open-air exhibitions.
"According to architect Stefano Boeri, the project aims to balance the recovery of a decommissioned urban infrastructure with the collective interests of the surrounding neighborhood. The ground floor is planned as an open courtyard containing commercial services, cultural spaces, and work environments, while the rooftop garden is intended to accommodate events, installations, and open-air exhibitions."
