Islington Council's planning committee has approved the redevelopment of The Pentagon at 48 Chiswell Street, which involves partial demolition and the addition of two storeys. The project faced opposition from residents worried about light loss, especially from the Whitbread Estate, but committee chairman Cllr Martin Klute deemed the proposal straightforward after extensive deliberation. The applicants aim to retain 75% of the existing structure and pledged £2,937,500 to the council’s affordable workspace scheme instead of directly incorporating affordable units into the project.
Cllr Martin Klute stated, 'The daylight and sunlight aspects of it have been well discussed in the report. I think at this point this is a fairly straightforward proposition.'
The planning committee reiterated concerns about reduced light for neighbouring properties, particularly those in the Whitbread Estate, despite the applicant's claim that the development will exceed guidelines for daylight loss.
The applicant was justified in increasing the structure's height because they were retaining 75 percent of the existing building, thus reshaping the extra floors.
The applicant proposed a financial contribution of £2,937,500 to the council's affordable workspace scheme instead of providing affordable workspace in the new building.
